This listing of Norfolk Southern locomotives is current as of Jan. 1, 2018 and shows an NS motive power fleet of 3,917 locomotives, 175 slugs, and two remote-control platforms, a decrease of 131 locomotives and an increase of 3 slugs from the Jan.1, 2017 totals.
During 2017, 160 locomotives will be rebuilt from DC-drive to AC-drive. This includes 100 GE-built D9-40Cs and D0-40CWs, 50 EMD-built SD-70s, and 10SD9043MAC conversions. 5 SD33ECO conversions  will also be completed.
The retirements section of this book lists the initial disposition of each unit retired during this time.
