PRECIOUS DOLLS – A TREASURY OF BISQUE DOLLS
by Ursula Brecht, HP Books, AZ, 1984 (Originally published in Germany as
    KOSTBARE PUPPEN
    , 1980).
Lavishly illustrated in color, this early out-of-print book provides a pictorial survey of antique bisque dolls.  Over 200 superb color photographs with identifying captions supplement a rich narrative which reviews a vast collection of these “precious dolls.”  The author, Ursula Brecht, “became interested in dolls as a child when she found one in a trunk with her grandmother’s clothes.  She lost the doll during World War II when a bombing raid destroyed her parent’s house.  But she never forgot the doll and vowed she would someday find one like her.  Years later, after marrying and having children, she found a doll in an antique shop in Cologne, Germany.  Since then, she has traveled throughout Europe searching for dolls for her own collection and photographing the collections of others.”
This book is “Brecht’s sensitive and passionate statement of her love for dolls.  Her essays describe how she turned a childhood fascination into an interesting and rewarding avocation.  She discusses how she began photographing her acquisitions and developing specific techniques for taking softly lighted, evocative pictures of dolls.  In
    Play
, the final essay, she talks about the role of imagination in the lives of children and adults.
    Precious Dolls
includes wistful, eloquent poems recalling the fantasy world of children and the roles dolls play in that world.  The poems and pictures create a beautiful photo album for a nostalgic look at a time many of us love to recall.”  Over one hundred brilliant color photographs picture these dolls by many of the foremost doll artists of yesterday.
