    Description

    DOLL MARK CLUES
by Ralph A. Shea, Antique Dolls Dictionary, self-published, Ridgefield, NJ, 1972.
This early out-of-print book is the beginning of what became a series of books on antique doll marks and signatures. This book is based on the author’s wife’s research which synthesized many of the best of her predecessors, including Elizabeth Coleman, Lueella Hart, Clara Fawcett and others.  Each page is divided into three columns.  The first column is labeled “Clue” which notes an identifying characteristic or mark, the second column illustrates the incised mark shown in a line drawing, with the third column gives a terse description of maker, materials, country of origin, approximate date and other distinguishing features.  A relative value guide good for date of publication [1972] is offered with the usual caveats and cautions regarding condition and other variables. This early book, a collector’s item in itself, is an indispensable reference for identifying antique dolls. Collecting the entire series will give the owner an invaluable resource reference work.
